The match is part of both teams' warm-up schedules ahead of their respective AFC Asian Cup qualification campaigns. On May 24, the two sides were supposed to play in a friendly, however it was canceled at the last minute.

On Friday, Thailand played Turkmenistan in a friendly match, winning 1-0 thanks to Adisak Kraisorn's 88th-minute winner. Bahrain also played a friendly on Friday, defeating Myanmar 2-0 at the same site as they defeated Myanmar on Tuesday.

Following this match, both teams will have a week off before beginning their AFC Asian Cup campaigns on Wednesday against Maldives and Bangladesh, respectively.
