Volleyball Nations League is an international volleyball competition that pits senior women's national teams from members of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the sport's global governing body, against one another. The first tournament was held in Nanjing, China, between May and July 2018, with the final held there. The United States took first place in the inaugural tournament, defeating Turkey in the final.
The competition was announced as a cooperative endeavour between the FIVB, the IMG, and 21 national federations in October 2017. Between 1993 and 2017, the World Grand Prix, a former annual women's international event, was replaced by the Nations League.The FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League is a tournament for men's national teams.
Adoption
The FIVB said in June 2017 that the 2018 World League and World Grand Prix would be dramatically changed, according to the Argentinian website Voley Plus. According to sources, the World League and World Grand Prix will have only one group of 16 national teams starting in 2018 (no more Groups 1, 2, or 3). The FIVB announced the men's and women's Volleyball Nations Leagues in a press statement in October 2017, announcing the competitions as a substitute for the World League and World Grand Prix
Format
The competition will be split into two phases, similar to the last World Grand Prix, but with several alterations to the competition formula: a preliminary round (known as preliminary round) with a rotating host city system, and a final round played in a pre-selected host city.
The preliminary round lasts five weeks, compared to three weeks in the World Grand Prix. The competing teams are divided into pools each week, and each team plays one match against the other teams in its pool. In a pool, all games take place over the course of a weekend in the same city.
The top five teams in the overall rankings qualify for the final round once all preliminary round matches are completed, while the remaining teams exit the competition. The host nation qualifies for the final round by default.In the inaugural edition of the competition, 16 national teams will compete: 12 core teams, which are always qualified, and 4 challenger teams, who may risk relegation.
Preliminary round
Every core team hosts a pool at least once throughout the round-robin event, which has 16 teams. Each week, the teams are separated into four pools of four teams and compete for five weeks, totalling 120 matches. In the final round, the top five teams from the round-robin event join the hosts.The four challenger teams will be considered for relegation, with the last-placed challenger team being eliminated from the next edition. The Challenger Cup champions will be invited to compete in the next edition as a challenger team.
The final round
In a round-robin style, the six eligible teams compete in two pools of three teams. Each pool's top two teams advance to the semifinals. This round pits the top-ranked teams against the second-placed teams. The semifinal winners go on to fight for the Nations League title.
Challenger Cup
The FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup will be a national team competition held concurrently with the Volleyball Nations League. Teams not currently competing in the Volleyball Nations League will compete in the Challenger Cup, which will feature one host team and five teams from each of the five continental confederations as follows:
The Continental Confederations, which are in charge of choosing which teams will qualify for the FIVB Challenger Cup, have the option of organising their own Continental Qualification Tournament or using an existing competition to do so.The FIVB Challenger Cup will be conducted prior to the FIVB Volleyball Nations League Finals, with the victor qualifying as a challenger team for the following year's VNL.
